Common Autoimmune Diseases
Autoimmune diseases are complex and diverse, affecting different parts of the immune system and different organs in different ways. This also makes these difficult to diagnose. Autoimmune diseases often require multiple medications that target different aspects of the immune system, such as inflammation, cell signalling or antibody production.
Lupus (SLE)
A disease where the immune system attacks the body, causing inflammation and damage to various organs. It has no cure, but can be treated with medication and lifestyle changes.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
An illness where the immune system attacks the lining of the joints, causing pain, swelling and stiffness. It can affect any joint, but often affects the hands, feet and wrists.
Scarring Alopecia
Hair loss that occurs when the hair follicles are damaged by inflammation, infection, injury or autoimmune disease. It causes permanent bald patches on the scalp or other parts of the body
Diabetes (Type I)
An autoimmune disorder where the pancreas produces little or no insulin, a hormone that helps the cells use glucose for energy. It is caused by an autoimmune reaction that destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas
Scleroderma
a condition that causes hardening and thickening of the skin and sometimes affects internal organs and blood vessels. It is caused by an autoimmune reaction that damages the connective tissue in the body
Psoriasis
A chronic skin condition that causes red, scaly patches on the skin, often on the elbows, knees, scalp and trunk. It is due to an immune system problem that makes skin cells grow faster than normal
